چکیده

Background: Cytological analyses of effusions or body fluids play an important role in the diagnosis of various lesions. Most importantly it gives a significant contribution in cancer research and staging of various tumors. Most commonly analysed fluids are pleural, ascitic, pericardial and occasionally peritoneal fluid/wash. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study for one year duration from August 2014 to August 2015 was conducted in the Department of Pathology, Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. All the body fluids which came for cytological analysis are included in the study. These fluids were analysed for physical properties like the volume of fluid received, colour and odour. Smears made from these fluids were stained with Papanicolaou stain and Hematoxylin and Eosin Stains and evaluated. Results: Cytological analysis was done on 60 cases. Non neoplastic lesions were the predominant diagnosis given in both pleural fluid analysis (93%) and ascitic fluid analysis (83%). Neoplastic lesions were reported only in 7% of cases in pleural fluid and in 17% of cases in ascitic fluid analysis. Tuberculous inflammatory lesions with caseation necrosis, lymphocytic infiltrate and occasional epitheloid granulomas was reported in 3 cases (10%). Conclusion:This study showed that meticulous evaluation of the body fluids for their cytological, properties will help the clinicians in clinching the diagnosis as well as staging of tumors.

مقایسه ارزش تشخیصی تومور مارکرهای مایع پلور با سیتولوژی مایع پلور و بیوپسی ‌پلور در اثبات وجود بدخیمی

Introduction: Cancers are the most prevalent causes of exudative pleural effusions after para-pneumonic pleural effusions. Despite the combination of the pleural fluid cytological studies and pleural biopsy, diagnosis could not be reached in an important number of cases. In an attempt to improve the value of pleural fluid analysis in the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion, some studies...

بررسی مقایسه‌ای نتایج تشخیصی سیتولوژی و بیوپسی افیوژن بدخیم پلور در بیماران مراجعه‌کننده به بیمارستان شهید صدوقی یزد بین سال‌های 1383 تا 1393

Introduction: Malignant pleural effusion is recognized as the second most common cause of exudative pleural effusion. Thoracentesis and cytological examinations are regarded as simple procedures that can be performed easier than biopsy presenting less pain and danger. Hence, this study aimed to compare the results of malignant pleural fluidcytology and pathology of effusions in order to determi...

Value of DNA analysis in addition to cytological testing in the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusions.

BACKGROUND Aneuploidy appears to be a highly specific marker for cancer, and measurement of cellular DNA content by flow cytometry is rapid and reliable. This study was undertaken to determine if the addition of DNA analysis improved the sensitivity of cytological diagnosis of malignancy in pleural fluid. METHODS Pleural effusions from 92 patients were studied by cytological examination and f...

Diagnostic implications of telomerase activity in pleural effusions.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of telomerase activity for discrimination of malignant and benign pleural effusions. Pleural effusions were collected from 109 consecutive patients in whom the diagnosis was confirmed with cytological and/or histological examinations. Cytological samples were classified as malignant (n=63) and benign (n=46). Telomerase acti...
